De fortapte pikers øy/ The island of lost girl’s

{This larp was held from July 21th- 28th 2012. See photos and read more here}

Me and Therese is  going to arrange a big historical LARP (live action role-playing game ) next summer. It’s going to be over 30 players and it will last a whole week. The story for the larp is set to the year 1945 and World War II is over. There is finally peace and tolerance, but at the State’s Detention Camp for Women on Hovedøya in Oslo, the case is quite different.

…  This island goes under the name The Island of lost girl’s among people. Here, hundreds of women have been collected – women who have had dealings with German soldiers. So-called “tyskertøser”  ( ‘Jerry-bags’ ) . They have been placed there under the pretext that they must be protected from the mob, but the truth is that the detention camp has been established to punish the women who have committed the biggest betrayal of all: to go to bed with the enemy.

 “Ja, tøs du var den verste av dem alle.
Et hakekors skal brennes på din skalle.“

“Yes, you whore was the worst of them all.
A swastika to be written on your forehead. “

We want a historic LARP that focuses on the treatment of the girls after the war ended in 1945. How was it to be a Jerry-bag? What was it like to be harassed, hated and punished for having a crush? And how was life in the internment camp? And how was it for the soldiers who worked at such a place…..

Unfortunately, there is not much information about the girls and their tragic fate. This is because the Norwegian government has consciously chosen to cover up what happened to them, but it is also because the vast majority of women who were branded as tyskertøs/ jery-bags never dared to come forward later in the fear of what would happen to them. Fortunately, there are a select few how have been willing to tell their story, and it is these stories and the few documents that exist about the State’s Detention Camp for Women on Hovedøya that we will we base our LARP on .

    Wow… that’s a project. I have a hard time imagining how you’ll be able to play something like this. It doesn’t seem you know a lot about that time and I can hardly believe that you’ll be able to experience what they did. Plus: Are you going to do things to your players like shaving their heads. Sometimes these women were also violated and mutilated. I have been a larper for a long time but I don’t think that this is a good idea.

    I can understand your concern.
    In Norway, very few girls were shaved and on Hovedøya, it was more mental than physical violence.

    We operates with a strict system of safety words and we have a close dialogue between those who will play guards and prisoners.

    In the two years we have worked with this LARP, we have learned so much.

    This is kind of off topic, but also on topic – I’m also not sure if this has happened yet so I’m not sure how relevant it is. Reading “A Woman in Berlin” by anonymous would be a good choice to gain some psychological insight into why a woman would chose to “sleep with the enemy.” The book was, at least for me, a very difficult and heavy read due to the content matter but I felt it was an important read as well, because the author really goes into detail about the needs of the day, and motivations behind things. It’s a different city and a different time (Fall of Berlin) but the psyche of a woman in a strange and unreal situation brought about by WWII.

    The LARP will be held in 2 weeks. I am so excited.
    Unfortunately I have not had the time to read “A Woman in Berlin”, but its on my to-do list. I have read so many importan books on this subject, but none of them are translated into English. (It is a shame)

    My grandmother worked in the British occupied area–at an airport after WW2 and she had an affair with a British officer which made her ostracized by her fellow Germans. She had a baby and gave the child up for adoption. Soon after she had the baby, her husband came (he had been away in the war) and made her sign a paper stating that child was not of his bloodline (which was rich as he had fathered another child out of wedlock during the war but again, before the war they were theater people so perhaps had more open ideas). She declined again to go back to Berlin with him and divorced. She became sick no long after and the man who delivered bread to the airport began to leave her a loaf of white bread to eat and they developed a relationship, married and came the the United States (his sister sponsored them). The food shortages were quite severe in Germany during and after the war. Women often did what they had to do to feed their children.

  6. [...] I’m back from De fortapte pikers øy/The Island of Lost Girls. As I have mentioned before, this is a big LARP that me an Therese was hosting.
